Giuseppe La Spada

Sean McMahon(NASA Ames Research Center, USA e Co-director, UK Centre for Astrobiology)

	ENG
Aphar means breathe as well as ash, beginning as well as ending and for menew beginnings and new cycles.I believe there is a dimension that is bothwater and infinite space, depth and immensity, ruled by the impermanence,by the becoming.

Giuseppe La Spada
Pumice is a volcanic rock, a kind of frozen lava peppered with little holes, which formed when gases expanded rapidly during an eruption. These holes make pumice so light thatit can float on water. Sometimes volcanic eruptions produce huge rafts of pumice that float around on the sea until the holes are filled by encrusting algae and bacteria (or chemical slime), causing them to sink. Thus, in the few years after it erupts, pumice can travel through many environments, from the hot volcano to the surface of the ocean and finally the seafloor. This is why we have suggested that pumice may have played a role in the origin of life, by providing a large number of tiny compartments (the holes) with alarge combined surface area, often lined with catalytic minerals, and by passing through a series of different physicochemical conditions, each with its own contribution to make.
I see in Giuseppe's work the energy, dynamism and fragility of life contrasted with the bleak, cruel silence of the space that surrounds us. The universe that created us is also extremely hostile. Life emerged from deadly forces: deep water and molten rocks.

Sean McMahon(NASA Ames Research Center, USA e Co-director, UK Centre for Astrobiology)

This series was inspired by a famous quote by Picasso, who said, ‘I don't imitate nature, I work like her.’ Playing on the metaphor of overheating, I overheated the computer’s processors and created a patch to measure their temperature, resulting in an image sorting process that, paradoxically, turns out to be very similar to organic melting, almost like collapsing glaciers.

Eyes on Water: always different,
always the same. 2026 Audio visual Installation

Human Eye + Computational Eye

Towards a Computational Atlas of Water Motion

The project is structured as a sustained dialogue between two irreducible modes of observation. Neither is primary. Neither is complete alone. Human vision brings sensory presence, emotional resonance, cultural memory, and poetic interpretation — the capacity to be moved by what is seen. Computational vision brings motion analysis, turbulence metrics, pattern recognition, and statistical modelling — the capacity to see what human perception cannot resolve.

	00 ARTIST STATEMENT

Water has always eluded complete understanding. I have observed it for more than twenty years — through photography, moving image, sound, performance, and long-form interdisciplinary research — across rivers, coastlines, glaciers, and open ocean. In every encounter, water has remained what it always is: the same.

01 CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK The Invariant

The central proposition of Eyes on Water is simple and radical: water is always the same. This claim operates simultaneously across three registers — biological, physical, and mystical — and the project holds all three in tension throughout. Biologically, it is the structural matrix of all life. Physically, it moves according to a grammar that does not change — the universal statistical laws of turbulence described by Kolmogorov. Mystically, it is the source from which we emerge and to which, as Raimon Panikkar understood, we return. Eyes on Water begins with this constancy and asks what new forms of attention it makes possible. The project couples human observation with computational vision to build a growing atlas of water motion — recorded across different geographies, climates, and environmental conditions, and subjected to a rigorous framework of fluid-dynamics analysis: optical flow, vorticity mapping, turbulence spectra, chromatic indices, fractal dimension.

02 COMPUTATIONAL OBSERVATION FRAMEWORK

I have created a computational observation framework that extracts hydrodynamic signatures from real water footage through computer vision, with Four Classes of Signature on Motion, Turbulence, Complexity, Chromatic & Environmental.

The computational instruments are not the subject. They are a means of encountering dimensions of water that have always been present
but remained inaccessible to unaided perception. What the algorithms reveal is not a reduction of water to data
— it is an expansion of intimacy with it.

04 SCIENTIFIC COLLABORATION
An Open Research Platform The project connects to a lineage of interdisciplinary thinking in which science and art have converged around water as subject: from Kolmogorov's statistical turbulence to Gaston Bachelard's phenomenology of the aquatic imagination; from Emilio Del Giudice's quantum coherence of biological water to the cosmological insight that all water on Earth is ancient, arrived via cometary impact, continuously recycled and never replaced. The atlas is a meeting point for all of these perspectives.

Current implementation should be considered an estimated indicator derived from video observations and not a direct physical measurement.

Through science, we discover recurring laws. Through art, we encounter what remains unknowable. Between these two perspectives, water appears not merely as a resource, but as a living archive of planetary memory.

"The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.

It is the source of all true art and all science.”

— Albert Einstein

Every human being leaves a mark in their wake. As human beings, we will leave three hallmarks of this era: plastic, concrete and steel. This image metaphorically represents the ‘clothes’ we are shedding; in this case, plastic from agricultural greenhouses, which immediately struck me as garments of a marble-like conceptual weight.“I lived in the shoes of a human being at the end of the millennium. Like him, I stripped myself of those old clothes. I too left my mark forever on this disheartening journey.”Giuseppe la Spada

The Voice of Nature, and Water in particular, have maintained their rhythm and balance for millennia.
Humanity attempts to dominate nature, abusing and violating its original flow.
The concept and mechanics of this installation are very simple. Visitors to the exhibition enter a room and hear the Voice of Nature (Shizen No Koe - an original composition by Ryuichi Sakamoto), watch a video of flowing water and encounter a small pool of water that they can touch. Touching the water alters the sound and, at the same time, the video, demonstrating how our touch today alters the flow of Nature, which has remained unchallenged for millennia.
Sounds and Video reacts to water touch

I believe there are “primordial” images that influence us forever. Being born in a seaside town certainly gave me the opportunit to encounter this vast blue expanse at an early age, even if only for its visual impact, and then the connection gradually shifted from the aesthetic to the mystical.

For us Westerners, the sea is an element of great comparison, allowing us to take our eyes off the anthropised world and aspire to higher dimensions.
I have always been fascinated by this element, even by a simple drop, because nothing like water can explain everything about our existence.

ENGDoes water react to sound? In 2010, I visited Masaru Emoto's laboratories in Japan, where I witnessed the experiments first-hand. Since then, I have been convinced that water reacts to sound and absorbs everything it encounters. I have always been intrigued by its aesthetics, its mutable nature, the vitality it expresses through its movement, and I believe it is the element we know least about today. We need to go back to the source.
