Thematic: Sea Pollution
‘Every time I go into the water, I feel that we are having to come to terms with a sea that is changing, with a foreign element that is literally invading the element most precious to the planet’s survival,’ writes Giuseppe La Spada in 2016, the year in which he took these photographs, posing a series of reflections and questions to the viewer:
We created plastic to contain water; tomorrow it will be exactly the opposite.
The artificial, sugar-coated and superficial beauty to which we are becoming accustomed will kill us. Will it be plastic that adapts to water, or vice versa? Will we be the ones to undergo genetic mutation to adapt to a new world?
Everything, alas, seems to be changing to bear the weight of an unwanted coexistence, and ‘coexistence’ itself will be the defining word of this immediate future. Evolution will have to live with its consequences: fish with plastic, us with increasingly contaminated food and seas, and cities with ever less nature.
‘If I close my eyes and think of the sea today, the image that comes to mind is that of a foreign element—plastic—and it is utterly suffocating.’
In 2018, three pieces from the series were selected by curator Valerio Deho’ for the exhibition RE-USE: Waste, Objects, Ecology in Contemporary Art. The exhibition aims to document, over a period spanning from the early decades of the 20th century to the present day, the ongoing relationship that art has had with everyday objects and waste, leading to a genuine environmental awareness. The works on display include many by internationally renowned artists such as Marcel Duchamp, Man Ray, Piero Manzoni, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Alberto Burri, Christo, Mimmo Rotella, Tony Cragg and Damien Hirst.
